Nilesh Barku Gavale
Aurangabad, India
Born into a conservative, lower-middle-class family, he spent most of his time with fourteen deferent families, basically in CHAWL. An animator by profession and an artist by blood, I began to work as an artist twenty years ago. Ever since, I’ve been searching for direct experiences with specific materials, challenging their limits and incorporating those challenges and transformations into the final piece. I am Nilesh Gavale. Navigating the art world with my own brand of quirky humor and a passion for the undiscovered, I like to think of myself as a patient observer and silent admirer of all the things around myself, may it can be a kite stuck in the electricity wire, a small singing sparrow out in the sky or a messy line of shoes outside my door. I believe in the philosophy of `spending TIME with TIME.' They say, with lack of necessary things, come creativity. As a kid, money was in short supply but not my love for a good game of cricket. I remember carving a cricket ball from trash in my backyard and stumps from scrap metal rods. The satisfaction of having crafted something out of simple, everyday things was almost intoxicating. I loved it and decided to pursue his career in the same field of art, a field where I could create freely!
This story is the reason I believe in, 'Starting where you are, using what you have, and doing what you can.'
My work dives in the realms of greys, it can be dark and melancholic and at the same time expressive and aesthetic. Grazing curvaceous forms and presenting a paradoxical combination of rawness and finesse, my work is a proud representation of all my nuances as a person and an artist. I explore as many mediums and styles as I can, be it oil or contemporary or acrylic or modern art. I first started taking commissions for art in 2006, had my first commercial exhibition 2007 and then started my studio in 2010.
Throughout my journey, my father has been my absolute mentor and I couldn't have imagined to be where I am today without his support.
